What is vitamin D?

A quick look at why vitamin D is an important nutrient in everyday nutrition.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin the skin makes when exposed to sunlight. It also comes from oily fish, egg yolks and fortified foods.

It contributes to the normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function.

People who spend most of the day indoors, wear sunscreen daily, or have darker skin make less vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form the body makes naturally.
