Vitamin C has more than one role
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. The body does not store much of it, so it needs a regular supply from food or supplements.
It contributes to the normal formation of collagen, the protein in skin, gums, cartilage and blood vessels. It also contributes to protecting cells from oxidative stress and to normal immune system function.
Good food sources are citrus fruits, guava, papaya, bell peppers and leafy greens. Non-acidic forms such as sodium ascorbate are gentler on the stomach for people who take vitamin C daily.
